That first Sip..

Amidst the darkness I heard a voice calling me.

“It’s Maghrib, wake up for Iftar.”

It’s Holy Month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, When Muslims fast (refrain from eating and drinking) from dawn to dusk.

“Wake up, take this.”

The voice was very familiar. But I was too tired to open my eyes..

It was my brother. He was waking me up to break the fast after the Maghrib call of prayer, after sun sets.

I opened my eyes. The room was dark and a tall silhouette towered over my bed..

I raised from my sleep and he gave me a date.

“You want Juice? What juice do you want?”

“I don’t mind, Anything.”

“Gauva or Berry?”

“khalas, make it guava.”

It’s always that first taste, that first sip..That sudden motion of liquid in your veins, the chew of food that you have missed all day. The feeling of strength, an accomplishment made..

You loose memory of the long day and remember only the best..

You forget the thirst, the exhaustion, the heat.

You forget it all.

At that particular moment, when your eyes become bright.. and your senses alert.. after a long, hot, energy less day.

Finally..

Food. Water. Coffee.

Only then.. you understand why you should be grateful enough to God.
